Rainbow NewsFor the first time ever in Russian history 2 gay men sign a marriage contract!
3 Oct. 2005
Mikhail Morozov and Denis Gogolev
2005/10/03. A well-known gay couple from Nizhny Novgorod - Denis Gogolev and Mikhail Morozov - signed the first in the history of Russia marriage contract with one another.
On September 28, 2005, Morozov and Gogolev, at a notary public in the presence of a lawyer, signed a document which will allow them "to regulate" their relations concerning property. The contract was drawn up using the law of civil procedure for the Russian Federation.
"It’s too bad that in our country the right to have the freedom to have a family has to be gained using "roundabout" ways. I am glad though that our legislation is incomplete which allowed Mikhail and I to sign this document, which is very important to us. I would like to recommend that others do not give up the fight for their happiness," said Denis Gogolev in an interview with the Nizhny Novgorod Telegraph Agency.
Denis Gogolev and Mikhail Morozov became a well-known gay couple in 2003, after Mikhail expressed interest in participating in the competition "Miss Nizhny Novgorod." A scandal in the Nizhny Novogorod eparchy added to their reputation when a priest secretly married the two homosexuals. The chapel, in which the two men were married, was later torn down by order of the Moscow patriarchate. The priest, who performed the ceremony, was defrocked and banished to a monastery.
Denis Gogolev also ran for the office of deputy in the State Duma to represent one of the districts in Nizhny Novogorod, but was not elected.
Denis and Mikhail are still welcome guests on television shows and the Nizhny Novgorod press continues to write about their happy family.
