Russian Orthodox Church Rams its Values into the Foundation of Human Rights
30 Mar. 2006
Metropolitan Cyril

Metropolitan Cyril

2006/03/30. The Russian Orthodox Church, which has declared serious intent to advocate "other principles" to Russian Society, has declared its position on Human Rights.

Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church, Metropolitan Cyril, has affirmed that "spiritual values" will form the base of the "new concept of Human Rights." According to the Hierarch, this means that things such as "abortions, homosexuality, gambling, euthanasia and other things that are actively defended today from the standpoint of protecting Human Rights cannot be recognized as norms."

Metropolitan Cyril considers that Authorities of the USSR, in signing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of the United Nations, "did not mean for the edicts of this document to be spread into the domestic political life of the Soviet Union." Signing this, in his opinion, was merely political pragmatism. Cyril also refers to the Final Act of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe in 1975 as "political pageantry."

All of these assertions ware made by Metropolitan Cyril on the eve before the Tenth Worldwide Russian National Assembly convenes in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. The Worldwide Russian National Assembly holds advisory status within the United Nations. At the session of the Assembly, as reported by Cyril, the "impermissibility of same-sex marriage registration and equal adoption rights for same-sex couples" will be discussed. His statements are included in the draft version of the final report from the Assembly.
