festival logoOpen letter to the governor of St. Petersburg to protect the festival "Bok o bok" is appeared on the web site of the youth movement "Oborona".

The appeal states that the public of St. Petersburg is extremely concerned about the situation around the festival "Bok o bok", which is devoted to overcoming homophobia and the development of tolerance in society.

Governor is asked personally to assess the situation, to find out whether the cause of the Fire inspection to close the clubs, which were planned to be used for the event, and help the film festival.

According to the signatories, the case was not without administrative resources.

"Disruption of the festival is unlikely to be held without the interference of certain officials who can exert pressure on the management of clubs and cinemas."

Recall International Film Festival "Bok o bok" was to be held in St. Petersburg in October 2-5, 2008.

It was planned to show feature films from Europe, America and Asia, reflecting concerns of LGBT relations.

According to organizers, the film was to create a positive dialogue with the public and build tolerance in Russian society.

However, organizers were not able to find the place for festival. At first, Film theatre and Film Center "Peak" refused to give the place, despite the tentative agreement.

Then, firemen inspectors appeared in nightclubs "The Place" and "Sochi", which agreed to let Festival use their space. They searched the clubs and drew up a deed of their improper condition.

On Thursday, October 2, both clubs had been closed to the public. They are not working so far.
