Gay Activists have begun preparation for the International Day of Silence. This year the event, which is meant to bring attention to the problem of discrimination, and moral and physical violence against gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transsexuals, is scheduled for April 24-25.
"The problems of discrimination, moral and physical violence, the lack of tolerance and the suppression of reporting hate crimes are no less relavent to Russia toda than it is to western countries ...", write the local organizors of the Day of Silence on their official site.
"...The last few years the number of crimes committed for ethic or religious hatred has been growing. Periodically, messages about hate crimes against homosexuals appear in the media, but in realitiy these crimes are committed dozens, if not hundreds of times more often...", note gay activists.
Recall that the International Day of Silence, is an annual event of non-violent protest, which began in 1996 in the USA and in 2007 in Europe. The organizors of the event may be contacted at the address: daysofsilence.ru@gmail.com
