Sociologists believe that same-sex marriages might be legalized in Ukraine in the near future, said Eugene Golovakha, deputy director of Sociology Institute of the National academy of sciences of Ukraine.
"Ukrainians now respond calmer to homosexual relations. Still negative but they perceive gay ties like something that does not bother them. Let them live as they want and we want them to stay away from us. If we shall join EU community, the issue of legalizing of same-sex marriages would be on the Ukrainian political agenda...", "Krajna" journal cites E.Golvakha's words (automatic translation here >>). He has predicted that the number of GLBT people in his country would considerably increase by 2020.
The main rival of same-sex marriage in Ukraine is Ukrainian Orthodox Church under Moscow Patriarchate. The Russian Church earlier in its official statements compared gay relations with the Apokalypsebut recently has smoothed its gay hate mood.
Earlier last year two gay men made a gay conjugalty. Their wedding ceremony was held on September 4th, 2010 during the Third International Eastern European LGBT-Christians conference. The couple was wed by clergyman from Norwegian Lutheran Church.
For Ukraine it was not the first gay wedding of GLBT Christians. Earlier several same-sex marriage ceremonies were held there by Diane Fisher - Bishop of Evangelical Christian Church that is known as Metropolitan Community Church of Canada.
