Around 15% gays in Moscow buy sex at least once a year
One seventh of gays in Moscow at least once a year buy sex. More than 19% of commercial sex takes place outside the country, in tourist trips. The most attractive in terms of sex tourism are Germany (11%), Spain (10%) and Thailand (over 9%). This is followed by Ukraine (8.2%), France (6.4%) and the U.S. (4.4%). Among those 70% paid for anal sex, and more than 20% were unprotected.
In Moscow, 13.9% of gay men and men who have sex with men at least once a year paid for sex, that is, had sex on a commercial basis. In Russia as a whole this figure is much lower - 10.5%.
7.4% of gays in the capital had up to two commercial sexual contacts per year. More than 5% paid for sex on average once a month. 1% of homosexuals had up to 50 commercial contacts in one year.
These are the findings of the European Internet research among MSM - men who have sex with men (EMIS). A detailed statistical report was published in late 2011. The survey was attended by over 5,000 Russian gay men who have sex with men.
About 30% of respondents found commercial sex partner on a special website for gay and bisexual men. More than 18% met him in a gay sauna (5-6 of popular ones in Moscow). In a night club sex was bought in almost 14%. Approximately similar number of gay men - from 7 to 8% - find a commercial sex partner in cafes, bars or at the cruising places.
