Rainbow NewsEuropean reaction on the events in Saint-Petersburg: "Better to live in hell than in Russia"
9 Feb. 2012
Last year more than 250 thousand people signed the petition with a call on the Saint-Petersburg's Legislature (ZakS) to remove from its agenda the draft-law that bans the propaganda of homosexualism, reminds the leading British LGBT portal Pinknews.co.uk.
I love my gay son. Is he becoming outlawed now?
Don't show ballet to your children, they have men in stockings!
My colleague is lesbian. Don't shy of her, Babich!
But with little success. The Pinknews.co.uk informs its audience, referring to various news agencies, that ZakS has voted for that draft-law in its second reading (31-Yes, 6-No, 23-Asbtained) and increased fines for "propaganda" (Gay.ru article with automated translation >>). In this case, Saint-Petersburg may join other Russian regions, including Ryazan and Arkhangelsk, that "ban to pronounce a word "gay". Recently the similar law has been adopted in Kostroma region. Rumors say that Moscow City Duma is very likely to follow it too.
The international community has voiced serious concern over the second largest Russian city's plan which for a long time was being considered to be as "a link to Europe" to make LGBT people silent. Experts stressed that the draft inadmissibly equalizes homosexuality with pedophilia. Deputies stayed deaf to experts' warning. Up to now more than 260 thousand people have signed a new petition on ALL OUT Internet page that protests the ZakS homophobic draft and similar laws which are already in effect on the territory of the world's largest country.
Other European and American mass media informed their readers about it. And reaction was quick. "Do not forget the fact that Russia is not a democratic country", wrote user dAVID. "She pretends to be democratic but in truth there are neither freedom of meetings nor freedom of speech, the voting results are fake and leaders that aren't loyal to dictator Putin are dying or disappearing mystically. The life expectancy of Russian men is 59 years (in comparison with 78 years of British) and the main cause of it is chronic alcoholism".

Hitler had started with antigay laws
Johnny joins dAVID saying that "Russia is sliding down to the old times of communist czars reign. The Russians are very close to declare Putin as their lifetime president, to the point of no return to democracy".
"It is high time to address every American or European cruise ship that brings tourists to Saint-Petersburg with a call to join the boycott", proposes A N Spit.
"As a gay I would prefer to live in Russia than in Nigeria. Although, trying to choose the lesser of two evils - there is practically no difference. I am sure that it would be even better in hell", reasons Ikenna David.
Not only common people have expressed their indignation with the developments in Russia, very famous figures have also joined them. For example, Stephen Fry in his Twitter page wrote: "Hell's teeth! Something must be done to stop these fantastical monsters. Will talking about that Tchaikovsky be banned?" and left a link to the above mentioned petition on Allout.com, that everyone is free to sign.
