Rainbow NewsLGBT winter sports festival in Moscow suburbs deranged by homophobes
12 Feb. 2012
The LGBT Winter sports festival in Moscow's suburbs will take place in other location than was previously planned. On the verge of its opening the owners of a suburban health resort have unexpectedly broken the contract with LGBT sports festival's organizers. On Friday afternoon, soon after this unfriendly act, the local mass media were citing the sports complex's owners as saying that "they would have never allowed to host such an event inside their health resort because a lot of students and youth prefer to use it for relaxation purposes" (automated translation here >>).
The newspapers of Zelenograd have published several anti-gay and ambiguous articles before the LGBT event's opening. A massive homophobic campaign was launched in Vkontakte social network. Some gay haters have placed impolite banners on the Internet page of the LGBT winter sports festival, some of them were threatening LGBT community: "Woe is gay, profane!", "Down with LGBT sects!", "Bang! And there are no fags!" and others (see the Festival page, the link is in Russian and may be inaccessible from abroad).

"We feel comfortable when we play sports together with our friends, we do not feel ourselves deprived in a homophobic society. And now we have an opportunity for self realization, to reach goals and just to be fit and sound!", announced Konstantin Yablotsky, the leader of the Russian LGBT sports federation some time ago in his interview for the "MK" (Moskovskij Komsomolets daily newspaper). And soon it was found that now gays have no right to enjoy sports together not only with straight people but also in their proper reservations".
As a side note: in the end of January the news about a series of LGBT sports events in different Russian cities have made homophobes to go into hysteria. Sergey Gurov, the minister for sports of Krasnoyarsk region, advised Russian gays and lesbians "to choose another available city to play sports": "Well, (they) always try to hold the gay parade in Moscow. I believe that it would be better to hold there a combined sports contest, inviting people from all over Russia with such perversions to participate in it...".
About 400 people wanted to go to Koltyshevo village near Solnechnogorsk in Moscow's north-western suburb this weekend. The real number of its participants was kept in secret, it was much less (for comparison: in autumn 2011 the similar LGBT event gathered more than 150 people in Saint-Petersburg's suburbs). Organizers are not willing to give more details about LGBT winter sports festival in Moscow region. Now they are busy with solving problems that came like a bolt from the blue.
