Rainbow News15% of Russians consider homosexuality normal
14 Feb. 2012
74% of Russian citizens regard homosexuality as a "vicious distortion of human nature," 15% consider it a normal sexual orientation, shows a survey conducted by the Agency of Social Technologies, "Polytech" commissioned by the Public Chamber, reports "Interfax".
79% of respondents expressed the view that Russia should not allow gay marriage (in favor of them were 13%). 87% voted for a ban on gay pride parades, 9% expressed the opposite view.
82% of respondents (versus 13%) consider undesirable to permit gays and lesbians educational and other work with children and young people.
The study was performed in November 2011 in preparation for the hearings held before the Public Chamber Commission on Ethnic Relations and Freedom of Conscience. The survey was conducted by the telephone survey of 1,800 people older than 18 years in 149 cities in 74 Russian regions.
Independent experts put the results of this study into question. First of all, it became clear that its authors do not have the necessary qualifications. It is suggested that the customers in the Public Chamber were seeking the results which allegedly show the religious ("defect", "sin") vector in the perception of homosexuality in Russia.
