Rainbow NewsRussian Orthodox Church's spokesman: The people will support the Church in its fight against "propaganda of homosexualism"
22 Feb. 2012
"These people (open gays, lesbians - Gay.Ru) want to change the whole society in a wrong direction, other than we consider it should be", said arch-priest Vsevolod Chaplin, the head of the Moscow Patriarchate Synod's department on relations of the Church and the society (office telephone +7 (499) 252-47-12) on-the air of the "Rain" TV channel (automated translation >>). He said that the Church's stance would stay as hard as it was possible, including the issue of "propaganda of homosexualism" among minors. "Why should propaganda of homosexualism be in places where minors might appear? The leaders of so called gay community are always saying that they are not working among adolescents and children. But why they do not work in the places where minors can't appear? Where is the logic?", reflects Chaplin, answering the journalist's remark on "extremely obscurantist stance of the Russian Church" at the dawn of 21st century.
"I am not talking about private life", says Chaplin. "I am concerned with an attempt to shift social paradigm. I do not like a change that leads to an assertion that in sexual life absolutely everything is possible...".
He was sure that "the majority of the Russian people supported any measures which anyhow limited the propaganda of homosexualism".
For reference: The Russian Orthodox Church has recently launched a wide-front offensive on LGBT rights. And arch-priest Chaplin is one of the mouthpieces of gay hate position of the Russian Church. Since mid 2000s, then the closest companion in arms and deputy of metropolitan Kirill (acting Patriarch) "very clearly" demanded to ban "public propaganda of homosexual style of living" because, according to his words, "it was being rejected by the Russian society, caused protests and unacceptance". Not once he has been comparing homosexuality with an illness, alcoholism and drug-addiction. In 2009 he called gays as "miserable people", referring to some researches that allegedly stated that the number of drug users, suicides and alcoholics was higher among gays".
In 2011 the controversy between Chaplin and gay community became very acute - even prima ballerina Anastasia Volochkova stood up for gays. In September 2011 homosexuality was equalized with "zoophilia, pedophilia and incest" in a document made with some participation of Chaplin. The Church promised that LGBT organizations would face with "peaceful and legitimate counteractions". At that time draft laws which ban so called "propaganda of homosexualism" were being lobbied in Russian regional legislatures.
