Rainbow NewsRussia's representative at the UN: gays are not discriminated in Russia, they don’t need other rights
9 Mar. 2012
Russia opposes the legalization of same-sex marriages and the creation of special legal status for selected groups including gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people - advised the Russian Foreign Ministry Commissioner for Human Rights, democracy and the rule of law, Konstantin Dolgov in Geneva, at the Human Rights Council, according to "UN News Center."
"We should not create a special legal status for certain selected groups, including LGBT people. This is about legalization of same-sex marriage and adoption," - Konstantin Dolgov advised.
"We are against the development of specific legislation to protect gay people from discrimination in the international organizations - continued the official. - Their rights are protected enough by common anti-discrimination international law treaties."
New documents may lead to further erosion of the international standards in the sphere of human rights, separation of the categories of persons claiming their "own rights" and specific protection. He fears that such new documents "can be used to foment disputes and force imposition of behavioral models, which are not accepted everywhere in the world " - the Russian representative advised.
We are reminded that in response to the treatment of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton condemning the St. Petersburg law on "propaganda of homosexuality", Dolgov said that during its development "...traditional cultural and moral values, prevalent in Russian society were taken into account."
