Rainbow NewsLaw "Don't Say Gay" in Effect: Gay Pickets Broken Up & Gay Actions Banned
5 Apr. 2012
Gay hate law has come into effect in Saint-Petersburg. Local authorities just easily refuse now to authorize actions aimed at fight against LGBT-peoples' discrimination, referring to gay hate norms of the regional Administrative Code. Its replies are being forwarded also to the FSB (Federal Security Service), Prosecutor's Office and the City's Interior.
For comparison: just yesterday the local police allowed gay activists to picket near the Youth Library named after Arkady Gaidar, today those who have been picketing at the Youth creative works Hall were attacked by homophobes and later detained by the police.
The "Coming out" LGBT organization faced with a ban on its public actions in the framework of the campaign "The Week Against Homophobia" - the authorities of several districts of Saint-Petersburg refused to authorize gay pickets followed after the adoption of discriminatory laws towards LGBT and hushing up of gay hate crimes.
"The words of the supporters of this gay hate law that it would not in any way affect the activity of LGBT organizations as well as it would not impose a ban on its public actions turned out to be another lie. As we are witnessing now this law has led to a direct suppression of LGBT issue...", said Mikhail Belodedov, "Coming out"'s manager.
Saint-Petersburg gay activists have promised to go to the streets with single pickets on the Greek square in front of the "Oktyabrskiy" concert hall in spite of the local authorities ban. These pickets are dedicated to the Int'l Day of Silence. Thousands of people around the world join this action of non-violent protest every year, attracting the public to dreadful consequences of the state's and society's homophobia. These actions are prohibited now in Saint-Petersburg. >> (PDF document, 374.45 kb, in Russian).
