Rainbow NewsMore Arrests of LGBT Activists for "Homopropaganda" in Saint-Petersburg
7 Apr. 2012
An action of single pickets dedicated to the International Day of Silence took place today at noon at the "Oktyabrskiy" Concert Hall in Saint-Petersburg. Seven taped activists for half an hour changing each other have been expressing their protest against hushing up of discrimination and violence toward LGBT, against gay hate in Russia that outlawed gays and lesbians. Two of picketing gay activists were detained by the police for "homopropaganda".
Ambiguous text of the law made the police to ponder over and consult about what was the propaganda. Finally they decided that only slogans of Igor Kochetkov ("No to hushing up of gay hate crimes!") and Sergey Kondrashov (A friend of ours is a lesbian, my wife and I love and respect her, her lifestyle is usual to ours, her family is socially equal to our family!"). Earlier Sergey Kondrashov wrote an open-letter (automated translation here >>) on behalf of straight majority to deputy Milonov (work phone +7 812 318-80-12, e-mail: vmilonov@assembly.spb.ru, social network VK page (in Russian), twitter (in Russian)) that was signed by more than 16 hundred people.
Now the two detainees are held in the 76th police department of Saint-Petersburg. Sergey was freed around 5 pm, the court hearing is scheduled on Monday. Igor Kochetkov's release followed. They were accused of doing homopropaganda and disobedience to the police. Sergey said that he enjoyed his several hours stay in the 76th police department. "There are absolutely adequate policemen with sound sense of humour. It's been a long time I haven't laughed like this! I believe that men of this department made a big fun of Milonov's initiative!".
Gay picketers held photos of Pyotr Tchaikovsky and Marina Tsvetaeva with same-sex love quotes from their love letters and works besides placards with slogans. Earlier these placards were refused by one of the largest Russian advertising agencies to be boarded around the city's centre on the fear of being fined on half-a-million Russian rubles.
Around 30 passers-by supported gay activists by giving solidarity applauses for their courage.
"It is mostly staggering that the police do not investigate gay hate crimes at all and moreover detain on the grounds of "homopropaganda" those who specify the existence of this problem", comments Mikhail Belodedov, coordinator of the RWAHO in Saint-Petersburg, "Coming out" LGBT Organization's manager.
