Rainbow News"Rainbow Flashmob" in Russia: Gays Welcomed, Persecuted, Shot at
18 May 2012
Moscow Khabarovsk Novosibirsk Saint Petersburg
The Rainbow Flashmob unveiled in Russia. From the Russian Far East across the nation in its big and small cities where self-awareness of LGBT community is awakening to the westernmost corners of Russia hundreds of people joined the tolerance action yesterday. For several years this day is being celebrated as the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia along with this action of tolerance. Although this Day is not officially recognized in Russia, registered and informal LGBT groups and organizations try to use this day's meaning in order to attract attention to the difficult situation with human rights for LGBT people in Russia.
In Khabarovsk around one hundred people took part in the flashmob "Rainbow over Amur-river". On the eve of this action there was information about possible provocations against LGBT community but the police's concerns turned out to be in vain. The police had to be calm and bored. It was the fourth LGBT flashmob for Khabarovsk, writes Anni-sanni project, "the number of participants was less than we were expecting" (automated translation here >>). Andrey-che blogger wrote that "the number was more than 100. Khabarovsk, I am proud of you! Every year the number of participants is increasing. Everything went nice. I thank the police for security!".
In Khanty-Mansyisk a famous among the Internet gay-community person known as alla1958 turned the "Rainbow flashmob" into a recurring event! "Part of the balloons was handed over to children who were very happy to get colourful balloons and at last did not want to fly balloons into the sky. But I managed to fly another part of the balloons into the sky and children were delighted with it!".
"Congratulations to everyone!", posted alla 1958 on "Antidogma" Internet page (automated translation >>).
In Saratov several gay activists (most of them were girls) went out to one of the city's central square despite the threats from nationalists and clericals who were able to hamper the action by blowing up balloons. Action's participants were not harmed.
In Novosibirsk and Tyumen nationalists' public actions were authorized by local municipalities on the same spots where LGBT flashmobs had been planned to take place, reports the Russian LGBT Network. In Novosibirsk as soon as LGBT activists managed to get closer to the scene, nationalists who were waiting for them there roughly took away all balloons and destroyed them. The police stayed deaf and silent. LGBT activists have managed to keep some balloons safe and fly them into the sky. In Tyumen nationalists chanted abusive anti-gay cries, reports Yuliya Mamaeva, the leader of local branch of the Russian LGBT Network. They took away all the balloons and the police stayed away".
In Moscow the Rainbow association was an organizer of the Rainbow flashmob. Around 80 people gathered in a park near the Plevna war heroes memorial in Kitay-gorod. Two groups of LGBT activists went down the Myasnitskaya and Pokrovka Streets, handed out booklets that were informing about the fact that for 22 years in a row gays and lesbians are not considered by the World Health Organization as perverts or ill-persons, report action's activists in their blog (automated translation here >>). According to them, the police showed some interest in their action, expressed some wishes but did not hamper the action! Near 7:30 pm at the command of the Rainbow association's leader Andrey Obolensky 80 colourful balloons fly into the sky over Moscow. Part of its participants later joined the "peoples outdoor fete" at Kudrinskaya square that had been previously moved from Chistye prude.
In Saint-Petersburg the Rainbow flashmob was attacked by armed nationalists. Gay.ru has already informed about this incident (see automated translation of the article >>).
