Rainbow NewsMoscow: 7th Gay Pride Fiercely Opposed by Clericals
27 May 2012
Today for the seventh time in Moscow's history LGBT activists tried to hold Gay Pride in Moscow. The action was refused to be authorized on regular grounds. LGBT people have promised, despite Moscow's authorities ban and violent threats voiced by clericals, to come up to the Moscow City's Duma (Parliamentary body) on Petrovka street and the Moscow City Hall on Tverskaya street.
Several actions were planned to be held today in Moscow including one by opposition to Kremlin. The police and Special Security Forces (OMON) were on duty in different corners of Moscow. Yesterday the renovation of the pavement started unexpectedly near Mosgorduma building that had forced the gay action to unveil on the opposite side of the street near the bank and action's headquarters were located according to bloggers in the grocery shop "Azbuka vkusa".
Soon after the action's start on Petrovka one of LGBT activists was detained by the police. Radicals were also present there. Nazis were trying to snatch the Rainbow flag out of gay activists hands and to beat them up. The Rainbow Flag was defended. Then OMON came on the scene. Three people were detained. "Ridus" Agency's report is here. Gay activists appeared among crowds of journalists with placards but interviews were short. OMON and radicals competed with each other in detaining of protest movement's participants and beating them. Clericals abused citizens, turned the air blue, appealed to God and were snatching LGBT symbols out of the hands of action's participants and beat them black and blue.
According to accurate information there are from 4 to 11 gay activists in Tverskoe district police department, most of them are taking part in Gay Pride not once. "Echo of Moscow" reports about 20 peoples detained. "Metro" newspaper - more than 40 (including clericals). Later in the afternoon Moscow City Police Headquarters officially confirmed the number of arrested = 40 people. Some gay activists are detained in Police Department Meschanskoe and Basmannoe. More detailed information on them is here.
... Among the arrested there were members of the Rainbow association.

The public action should have been taken place on Tverskaya square at 2 pm. A group of men with T-shirts with words "Orthodox or Dead!" already had been waiting for LGBT activists near the Yury Dolgorukiy monument. They were posing for photographers from various news agencies. Nikolay Alexeev, a gay-activist, was arrested on Tverskaya together with some agressive clericals. "OMON kept a blind eye only on old women with icons who freely talked with journalists...", "Freedom Radio" notes the exception. In general the situation unveiled in the same way as on Petrovka. OMON was picking out of the crowd everyone with LGBT symbols who had dared to reply on journalists questions or who had wxpressed his (her) interest in the developments. On the eve of the action one could read in the blogs of Orthodox radicals calls for not allowing "Sodom" and even there were threats of physical abuse.

Elena Kostyuchenko who during the similar gay action last year was beaten up by "Orthodox man" (her story in May 2011 stirred up the Russian Internet) today has again repeated her small heroic deed. In the morning she had posted in her blog "Why am I going to Gay Pride-2 today" and went out to the Moscow city centre. Dozens of bloggers left in her blog the words of support. Later she was arrested by OMON.

The main aim of the LGBT activits protest this year were the discreditable laws on ban of so called "Homopropaganda" among the minors. On this ground the authorities put hurdles for the LGBT people to use their constitutional rights and even introduce censorship in mass-media and in cultural sphere. These anti-gay laws that had stirred up indignation in civil societies around the world were adopted in 4 Russian regions. The Mosgorduma (Moscow City Parliament) by the legislature initiative of United Russia deputies has planned to read the homophobic law this autumn.
