Rainbow NewsSecond gay activist fled Russia in search of political asylum
31 Jul. 2012
One more defender of LGTB rights left Russia in search of asylum for political reasons. Of them, one can soon be put on Interpol's wanted list.
It is Maksim Yefimov - known human rights activist from Karelia - who was declared on Federal wanted list in Russia on June, 26. Since the middle of 2000th Gay.ru wrote about numerous projects of Mr. Yefimov who was the head of Karelian branch of "Youth human rights group". The state accused Mr. Yefimov of "incitement to hatred" against Russian orthodox church. Investigation insisted on placing Mr. Efimov into hospital for psychiatric examination but he disappeared a few days before he was to come for the expertise.
Lately it became known that Maksim Yefimov is in Poland where he requested asylum for political reasons. "I had to cross the borders of Ukraine and Poland together with smugglers and drug dealers because of whom I was not far away from Polish prison. Arbitrariness of Russian secret service agents who set an illegal criminal case against me made me leave mafia Karelia and escape abroad", writes Mr. Yefimov in his blog (automated translation >>). Two hours after that declaration the Supreme court of Karelia canceled the decision of the court in Petrozavodsk about placing Maksim Yefimov into hospital for psychiatric examination. But the criminal case against him is still in force.
An article about the escape of another gay activist Alexey Kiselev is published in "Nezavisimaya gazeta" (automated translation >>). As a participant of gay parade and other protests of "Gay Russia", Alexey Kiselev is afraid of being accused in organizing riots during famous protest on May, 6, 2012 at Bolotnaya square in Moscow.
"They wish to frighten activists from all political parties and movements. So they needed an LGTB activist. I guess I was just the first one in the list because it was easier to set up an illegal criminal case against me. But I managed to escape the country just in time", says Alexey Kiselev.
