Rainbow NewsHuman rights and gay activists support and thank Madonna
11 Aug. 2012
Madonna - a courageous pop star from America, was not afraid to be hit by an awkward law approved by St. Petersburg’s legislative assembly which impose a ban on so-called "homosexual propaganda." While clerical and yellow press rave (some titles are very expressive - "Louisa Ciccone will not be allowed out of Russia," "She got herself in a mess", "Madonna will find herself in jail for striptease" and so on), gay activists and human rights defenders thank Madonna for her artistic and civic courage.
Among the first to respond were the activists of St. Petersburg LGBT organization "Coming Out", who had been forced to live and work in conditions of the unconstitutional ban. "We are grateful to Madonna for this brilliant performance in our support. She inspires and steers millions of people around the world, and her voice is particularly important for the community, which in Russia is now being driven into the underground", - says Olga Lenkova, a manager of human rights group. She notes that the flash mob prepared by civil society activists and fans of the singer almost went bust. Some posters with words "No Fear" were seized by the security.
RIA "Novosti" was one of the few of Russian media, which gave floor not only to the supporters of the Orthodox deputy Mr. Milonov and religious clerics, but also to those who consider the act of Madonna "the standpoint of... the whole modern civilization." "This is not a promotion or advertising of homosexuality, but propaganda of tolerance and opposition to homophobia" - the agency quotes a member of the Public Chamber, journalist Nikolai Svanidze. Lev Ponomarev, the head of the movement "For the Human Rights" also thanks Madonna. Elena Lukyanova, a lawyer and member of the Publiñ Chamber says: St. Petersburg’s law "Don't say gay" is unconstitutional. Ms. Lukyanova also stated that this is the standpoint of the Public Chamber, which will be formulated in the near future.
Musician and leader of the music group "the Time Machine" Andrei Makarevich believes that an actor has the right to voice a definite stand on his civil position. He said that on the radio station "Echo of Moscow", commenting his the objections to Madonna concert. Mr. Makarevich never showed himself to be very tolerant towards LGBT citizens. "I have not noticed how much she supports homosexuality, but I melt when I see the struggle of some of the Russian deputies with the modern international culture " - the radio quotes Mr. Makarevich.
Let us remind, that yesterday at the concert in St. Petersburg, Madonna made a statement in support of the LGBT community, keeping a promise made in March of this year. The star spoke about the values of democracy and tolerance in our world which is increasingly aggressive and hostile. She said that one could not hide behind religion to discriminate someone else, because each denomination urge to "Love your neighbor as yourself."
