Rainbow NewsAlmost 60% Russians are against prisons for gays - there are more and more those who are in doubt
25 Aug. 2012
57 % of Russians oppose criminal prosecution of homosexuals. Almost two thirds of individuals would not like, that the law would envisage imprisonment ...for homosexual intercourse performed by mutual consent between adult people". Since 2009 the number of such "liberals" has grown by 14 %! At the same time the number of those who believe that gays should be in prisons and camps has decreased by 11 % (from 33 % - in 2009, to 22 % - in 2012). In other respects, the poll has shown stability in perception of homosexuality by the society for the last 14 years, since 1998.
Results of the poll by "Levada-centre" (automated translation) demonstrate more criticism towards homosexuality, however people do not want discrimination of gay to increase, although they do not widely support the extension of our rights.
So, the number of citizens considering homosexuality "illness or result of a mental trauma" does not change very much - from 33 % in 1998 to 32 % in 2012. But there is consecutive growth by 1 per cent a year in the number of Russians who believe that "love between men" is "dissoluteness, a bad habit". From 35 % in 1998, to - 43 % in 2012.
Thus for the last 14 years the number of Russians perceiving homosexuality as "sexual orientation having the same right to existence as the straight one". That is the opinion of 15 % (in 2010) to 20 % (in 2005) Russians.
Other demonstrative moment of the poll - the reduction of those who is "sharply negative" or "rather negative" towards same-sex marriages. In comparison with 2010, the number of opponents of unisex marriages decreased by 7 %. And the number of those who are in doubt increased by more than 3 times since 2010 - from 4 to 13 %.
The study was conducted on July, 20-23th, 2012 under the representative All-Russia sampling of urban and rural population among 1601 persons at the age of 18 years and older in 130 locations of 45 regions of the country.
