Rainbow News5th Side-by-Side LGBT Movie Festival Unveils inSaint-Petersburg
25 Oct. 2012
37 films from 20 countries to be shown during this festival and morethan 15 esteemed guests from different corners of the world will come to meet film directors and participate in discussions.
Onethe eve of its opening the organizers told about the program ofthis event.
On October 27th, after the documentary film "Call me Coochoo" we will discuss the latest legislative initiatives against the LGBT community in different countries. Russia and Uganda are in the focus of this discussion. One of the participants is Ms. Stosh Yowin, LGBT activist from Uganda. Andrey Tolmachev, an official of the Ombudsman Office in Saint-Petersburg, Robert Bidron, a member of PACE from Poland, Igor Kochetkov, the Chairman of the Russian LGBT Network and Stefania Kulaeva, the director of ADC "Memorial" also participate in this event.
For the first time in the history of Side-by-Side LGBT Movie festival political debates will take place. On November 1st, after "The Rebellion" documentary (USA, 2009) debates on LGBT issue in Russian politics will start in the "Green lamp" press-club. This movie was chosen not by an accident, it reveals the details of the hidden life of US politicians who are latent gays. It shows double standards, the psychology of dual life and tells about the threat that impose on the society those who hide their real personality.
"TheRebellion" is some kind of a prologue to the debates. In the first round of the debates will "fight" Valery Sozaev, human rightswatch dog and Maxim Ivantsov, civil activist. They will argue about radical ways of outing (declaration about someone's belonging to LGBT community without his consent) of latent gaypoliticians who publicly oppose LGBT community's rights and freedoms.
In its second round the participants - Russian politicians, will discuss the possibility of inclusion into the political agenda and party's program of issues concerning the rights for LGBT community.
On October 30th we will talk about LGBT issues in the modern Russian art. It will start after the viewing of "The beginning" - a series of six Russian movies. Prominent movie directors and scenario writers Marina Potapova, Seva Galkin, Svetlana Sigalaeva, Masha Godovannaya, Milena Chernyavskaya, Elena Ustinova, Zhanna Zhunusova, Rinat Minnekhanov will try to seek an answer to important for LGBT community issues (e.g. who influences the selection and setting of the themes that can be introduced in the art).
This week is the dead-line for sending applications for nomination for a Side-by-Side LGBT Movie Festival's Prize "Brave Tail" that is to be given to representatives of civil society - journalists, artists, performers, social activists and politicians who supportequal rights for the Russian LGBT community. The LGBT movement in Russia is developing rapidly and attracts growing attention of thesociety. For us, LGBT- movement activists, the support of other representatives of civil society (journalists, bloggers, artists, painters, civil and social activists, politicians) is crucial.
Until October 25 the Festival's organizing committee accepts applications for the contest. We expect your applications. Anyone can suggest a candidate for the nomination.
