Rainbow NewsLargest LGBT Forum in Moscow
6 Nov. 2012
The V Annual Conference of the Russian LGBT Network finished in Moscow. This annual conference is the largest forum on the rights of LGBT people in Russia, hosting almost 100 people who work to protect the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people across the country, according to their press release.
This year, the topic was "the LGBT community and the right to identity." This was primarily due to the fact that the apparent trend in Russia has been the threat of persecution for people leading an alternative and incomprehensible to most others lifestyle.
Besides the traditional plenary sessions on the reports on the activities of the Russian LGBT Network the conference has become a platform for LGBT activists from different regions to exchange experiences on various theoretical and practical issues. The conference presented a new initiative, which promotes the development of the Network. In particular, the the LGBT parents movement and the Straight Alliance for Equality.
Conference adopted a series of important decisions about the activities for the following year. The principal among these was the list of priorities for the next year.
Igor Kochetkov, chairman of the Russian LGBT Network: "Our annual conference is the largest forum of human rights activists, who are fighting for human rights and the dignity of LGBT people. This year, we have to decide how we will continue to counter rapidly spreading homophobic laws and quickly increasing pressure, which the government has put on the civil society, and also how to defend our freedom, make our organization stronger and make the lives of people whom we represent, better.
I am very pleased that every year we welcome more and more participants and that the number of represented regions as well as quality of the discussions improve. This means that the movement is developing."
