Rainbow News"Don't Say Gay" law suspended twin-city ties between Milan and Saint-Petersburg
28 Nov. 2012
Milan suspends its sister city ties with Saint-Petersburg until the authorities of the second largest Russian city denounce the law that prohibited the so-called "propaganda of homosexuality" among minors and which came into effect on February 29, 2012. Italian Venezia, Torino and German Hamburg are likely to follow Milan in its move.
Milan City Council adopted its decision to suspend twin city ties with Saint-Petersburg on November 23. The decree introduced by Marco Cappato (Radical fraction in Milan City Council) was supported by the majority, reports "Contours" project. The deputies of Lega di Nord (conservative) voted against, "Cinque stelle movimento" party headed by a well-known comic and blogger - Beppe Grillo abstained. Silvio Berlusiconi's party "Popolo della Liberta" walked out of the hall during the voting in a move to show its disapproval of the procedure.
The Milan City Council's decision suspends the force of the Agreement on Twin City Ties between Milan and Saint-Petersburg signed in 1967 and halts all activities between the two cities' authorities.
Yuri Guaiana, a representative of "Certi Diritti" radical association that defends LGBT rights said that "Milan by its decision had expressed unambiguous support of human rights and basic freedoms, showed its commitment to antifascist, democratic and liberal values".
According to "Certi Diritti"'s press-release it is most likely that similar steps would be taken by Venezia (also a twin with Saint Petersburg since 2006) and Torino (November 2012).
For reference: Milan was one of the first European cities who stood against homophobic plans of Saint-Petersburg. On February 29, 2012, two dozens of protesters stood in front of the Russian Consulate General in Milan. In July 2012 Milan recognized same-sex marriages.
