On January 7, 2013 when Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas, the Head of the Russian Orthodox Church pounced upon homosexuals and equalized homosexuality with such evils as hard drinking, drug addiction, prostitution and lechery. Patriarch Cyrill called same-sex love a "vice" that had been "approved by the society" only during the times of decline of the Roman Empire and other civilizations".
According to Patriarch, homosexuality is included in the list of social phenomena that today are "the main threat for Russia" and thus indicate "the loss of faith".
"...In order to please one's comfort and pleasure people are refusing to follow moral norms. So the limits of vice and good are being gradually watered down. Hard drinking, drug addiction, lechery, prostitution and homosexuality - the things which from the earliest time considered to be unworthy of a human, nowadays are becoming the norm. The society had always been ill with vices, but today as well as in the times of the Roman and other Empires' decline, these phenomena are considered to be approved by the society. As a result, the institute of the traditional family is being disintegrated...", said Cyrill in his interview for Interfax-Religion News Agency and cited by the official Internet site of the Russian Orthodox Church.
