Rainbow NewsClashes in Moscow as State Duma Votes Don't Say Gay Law
25 Jan. 2013
Why did not you detain Nazis? Well, maybe we will do next time... (from Twitter @mirrorsbreath)
From 50 to 100 people were involved in clashes of LGBT activists with Orthodox homophobes in the centre of Moscow. Supporters of anti-gay law threw eggs and paint, used tear gas sprays and fists. According to Elena Kostyuchenko's Twitter, about 20 LGBT activists were roughly handled by the police. "The police were rough, by the way, at detainment. A guy who was near me was kicked. My bag was torn into pieces...", writes Elena, a journalist and human rights defender. Moreover she noted that nazis (ie. orthodox) were freed by the OMON (Moscow riot squads).
"I want to thank everyone who came today to protest against political Nazism, who stood for his (her) and our rights. Who defended us from the rabble and protected those who were kissing...", added Elena.
For reference: Today LGBT activists came to State Duma to protest with kisses against anti-gay amendments to the laws that impose fines for the so-called "homopropaganda" among minors. Experts and observers note that today near the entrance to the Lower Chamber of the Russian Parliament the number of LGBT activists were twice smaller than of religious extremists.
Yesterday night in Strasbourg Hokon Heugli, PACE rapporteur on LGBT rights, said that the draft-law on "homopropaganda" which was tabled today in Russian State Duma, "was an attempt to limit the basic rights".
The list of detained LGBT activists is published on "Antidogma" project site. Last time the detained for kisses near State Duma were kept in in local police department for 30 hours. Many of them will need help of a lawyer due to the police intention to prosecute LGBT activists for the breach of the article 20.2 of the Administrative Code ("Violation of the prescribed way of organization of a meeting", fine is up to 30 thousand rubles ($1000, ˆ740). Among LGBT activists is one deaf gay guy who came with his boyfriend to the State Duma with a single picket.
