Rainbow NewsMoscow: Teacher Layed off After His Support of LGBT Community
29 Jan. 2013
The Antigay Bill has yet not entered into force but one of the best teachers of Moscow was already discharged on the grounds of his support of LGBT community in clashes near Duma.
"It was made not for what he had done in school (he could not have done anything bad there), but for his non-violent actions outside the school. It was a catastrophic precedent. It was better to fire the panic-stricken principal - for actions inconsistent with his profession. I want Ilya Kolmanovsky to be reinstated with apologies", said a well-known litterateur Alexander Arkhangelsky who was unlikely to be friendly to homosexuals.
Kolmanovsky, a "perfect family man" who lost his job, apologizes in front of his students, according to information published on Liberty Radio, Echo of Moscow and Novaya Gazeta Internet sites.
As it has become known, some parents anonymously filed complaints to the school administration and asked the principal to "protect the children". Outstanding personality and good references as well as his long (18 years) teaching experience did not save him from the discharge.
The principal said that he had 6 complaints on me and with regret fired me on the grounds of rescuing of the school. I asked him whether the old times had returned. He said that those old times never passed away...", retells Kolmanovsky.
Just after the State Duma has approved the draft antigay bill, LGBT community began to air concern about the threats that straight open-minded people would be faced with on the grounds of the so-called "homopropaganda". The fear came true on the third day after the unanimous voting in the Russian parliament on the law #44554-6. On the other hand, Vladimir Ovchinnikov, the principal of the "Second School" lyceum, refuses to admit segregationist motives of Kolmanovsky's discharge, saying that he was a part-time teacher while other teachers of that lyceum had smaller teaching hours than he had. Observers are confused because that discharge was made in the middle of the school year.
"... I had to go out to the street (on protest action) also because I was not gay, says Iliya. Forgive me the pathetic, but we have to protect these (LGBT) people because if we do not - then the bell would ring for us. The time has come when keeping silence is more dangerous than speaking up. We have to speak up all together at the same time! Then fear and hate will disappear and we will come back to schools".
Professor Iliya Kolmanovsky, a biologist, was familiar to children of Russia because he led the educational TV series "A pocket scientist" and made excursions around Paleontology museum in Moscow. From time to time he appeared on the site of Snob.ru project and in the "Pink Giraffe" publishing house. He is a father of 2 children and mass-media called on him as a real highly experienced teacher of a smart education. He defended his thesis in Biology, laureate of biology, math, physics and chemistry teachers' 2011 Championship in the Nomination "The Tutor of Future Scientists".
In 2012 he has made himself popular by criticism of Vladimir Putin ecology experiments, in particular his article "Siberian Cranes turned out to be amphoras".
