Rainbow NewsStephen Fry met with SPB activists
15 Mar. 2013
Stephen Fry, a British actor, writer and producer, who the day before arrived in Saint-Petersburg, had a meeting with "Coming Out" LGBT organization activists. For him it was very important to know at first hand about the life of Petersburg's gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgenders in a situation of diverse limitations of LGBT human rights in Russia.
During his short-term visit Mr. Fry managed to talk with the people who are in some way involved in LGBT movement including a lesbian couple that is bringing up two children. He was deeply moved and saddened by the stories about the high degree of hatred towards LGBT in Russia. These stories were also concerned with the Russian teenagers who were being bullied at schools and even experienced bodily assaults.
Olga Lenkova, Coming Out's liason officer, stressed that the support of such people like Stephen Fry was of much importance for them and encouraged them to continue their task.
"I am deeply impressed with the activities of "Coming out"'s activists and all those who says and stands against bullying, homophobia and violence. They do that because they are proud, have got the sense of self-dignity and know that they must possess all the rights that others do. I hope the time shall come and Russia shall understand it", these words of Stephen Fry addressed to all LGBT Russians are being cited by activists.
