29 Apr. 2013
On 29 April of 2013 secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, Mr. Nikolai Patrushev suggested that the Council’s academic board should study the influence of the issues of same-sex relations on the destruction of the spiritual liaison fundamental for Russia. The announcement of Mr. Patrushev was a response to the moral and spiritual speech of President Putin.
According to the newspaper Kommersant, the members of the academic board refused to specify the list of potential threats, and only indirectly confirmed that this is about same-sex relationships. The Head of International Safety Center of the Russian Academy of Science, the Institute of World Economics and International Relations, Mr. Alexey Arbatov also confirmed it to the newspaper that what is meant is combating foreign and seamy values such as same-sex marriage and adoptions by such families.
President Vladimir Putin at the meeting with members of the Security Council
May we remind you that Security Council is an advisory body to draft resolutions of the Russian president concerning providing protection to vital interests of individuals, society and the state from internal and external threats, practicing uniform policy for securing national safety. Nowadays, the said authority consists mainly of former security officials.
During the third term of Putin's presidency, a campaign has been launched for exclusion of open gays from public life. Following the local regions of Russia, the State parliament began creating laws which restrict the rights of LGBTs to freedom of opinion, conscience and assembly. Putin’s top official - from the Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mr. Lavrov on to Russian Child Ombudsman Mr. Pavel Astakhov are stuck in the wordy homophobic rhetoric. The homophobic politics won the support among the nationalists, religious obscurants, and the highest ranks of the Russian church. And now the Council of Security may come in on the homophobic campaign to scientifically justify the policy of hatred.
The Council’s academic board includes representatives of Russian academy of science, sectoral research institutions and schools of higher education as well as individuals.
The plenary session of the academic board mentioned in the newspaper took place on the 24th of April. The message covering the session in the website of the Council mentions nothing about same-sex subject.
