Rainbow News"Homophobia, Milonov and Putin are Russia's shame" - May 1st Mottos in Saint-Petersburg
1 May 2013
"Homophobia is a shame for Saint-Petersburg!" - was the general idea of the Democratic Petersburg's column of marchers with gay men and lesbian women who joined it, reports the Rosbalt news agency. Marchers were also shouting "Milonov is a shame for Petersburg, Putin is a shame for the whole Russia!". A scarecrow of Vitaly Milonov, Saint-Petersburg Legislature's deputy and the author of gay-hate laws, was believed to be carried in the front-line of the column.
The police tried to hamper the column's procession on the grounds of the Saint-Petersburg's law that banned the so-called "propaganda of homosexuality". Democrats started from Oktyabrskiy Concert-hall a little later that it was planned due to Rainbow flags. The similar situation occurred last year, reported Baltinfo. March's organizers managed to persuade the police that the LGBT symbols were "the other symbols" like any other not prohibited by law May Day's attributes. At last the column was admitted to the Nevskiy avenue. It was noted that the group of gay men and lesbian women was guarded by 40 policemen.
Three LGBT organizations - "Coming out" and "Equality" and LGBT friendly "Straight Alliance for LGBT equal rights" participated in the march.
