Rainbow News2013: Russia the least gay friendly in Europe (again)
17 May 2013
The Russian Federation for the second consecutive year was recognized as the most gay unfriendly country in Europe. A new "Rainbow Index" (the report on LGBT human rights), which was presented by "ILGA Europe", the biggest European LGBT Organization with the kind support of the Council on Human Rights of the European Parliament and European Agency on Basic Human Rights, was published on the eve of the Interntaional Day against Homophobia and Transphobia that is being celebrated on May 17.
According to this index the legal status of gays and lesbians in Russia is the most unbearable among other European countries. Their rights in fact are being violated grossly. The only two things that LGBT people in Russia are allowed to do officially, in the opinion of European observers, are: 1) for women - in vitro fertilisation (in same-sex couples that hid their orientation from the state bodies) and 2) transgenders may marry people of the opposite sex.
In general "the achievement" of the Russian state is limited only to the laws that regulate the right of transgenders to change their name and sex in personal documents, even without obligatory surgical operation.
Russia has gained 7 points out of 100.
Great Britain has managed to reach the closest position to the human rights watch-dogs' ideal.
The Green Zone (gay friendly) consists of:
the UK (77 points)
Belgium (67)
Norway (66)
Portugal, Spain and Sweden (65)
France (64)
the Netherlands (60)
Denmark (57)
Iceland (56)
Hungary (55)
Germany (54)
The Red Zone (gay hate) is headed by Russia (7 points) and followed by:
