Rainbow NewsUkraine: flashmobs in support of LGBT passed without incidents
19 May 2013
Yesterday in the city center of Kiev on Bessarabsksaya square a rally was held in support of LGBT rights on the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia. The action, which, as in several Russian cities, was organized in the form of a flash mob, was attended by about 20 people who were holding big rainbow balloons and posters with the slogans: "We use airplanes, televisions, cell phones. We do not use outdated knowledge and laws," "Does the Earth stand on three pillars? Is homosexuality a disease?", "LGBT people are for family and understanding", "Homosexuality is not a disease, signed by Leonid Kuchma in 1993." At the end of the action participants released balloons into the sky.
At the beginning of the flash mob, a few provocateurs tried to join them with posters like "Klitschko - our president." Their posters had Klitschko brothers on a famous photo shoot for the German magazine "MAX", for which they were photographed completely naked. However, representatives of the police who were guarding the event pushed the provocateurs back. The flash mob took place without any incident, although there were several dozens of homophobic shouting insults, including profanity.
In Odessa, there were also a similar flash mob held with the launch of multi-colored balloons in the air and residents of Dnipropetrovsk had the opportunity to see the rainbow flag above the town, which is today the most recognizable symbol of the LGBT movement. For Ukrainian activists that is also one more reason to speak out against discriminatory laws No. 1155 and 0945 to ban the so-called "propaganda of homosexuality", which is still pending in the Parliament.
The events to mark the International Day Against Homophobia were held in Ukraine for the fifth consecutive year. In Lviv, the joint efforts of organizations "Gay Forum of Ukraine", "Gay Alliance Ukraine" and an endowment "Avante" was followed by a press conference "Gays as a factor of civilized choice of Ukraine." Visions for the future were discussed at Dnepropetrovsk press conference "Ukraine at a Crossroads: What human rights we have in our country" and Odessa "Respect for minority rights in the context of European integration, or Why Ukraine needs tolerance." Forces of activists from the organization Donbass and social projects with the support of the public organization "Gay Alliance Ukraine" held a press conference in Donetsk.
May we remind you that in Kiev on 22 May there will be a number of activities held within the LGBT festival "Kiev Pride 2013", including - Equality March, scheduled for May 25. The program of the festival can be found on its official website. In order to take part in the march of equality, one should fill out a questionnaire (in Ukrainian >>): such measures are taken for protection of the march participants.
Earlier, U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine John Tefft espressed his support for the March of equality. U.S. Embassy issued the message from Chief of Mission. "I am proud to extend my support to all of those who plan to participate in the second annual Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Equality March in Kyiv on May 25, 2013," - said the ambassador. He insisted that in many parts of the world, members of the LGBT community continue to suffer violence, discrimination, or persecution because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
"As Secretary of State [John] Kerry has said, all people, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity deserve ‘equality under the law’. By embracing diversity, promoting tolerance, and fighting prejudice and discrimination, we strive to build a world where everyone can enjoy equal human rights," - continues Tefft.
"I would like to convey my appreciation to the organizers of the Kyiv Equality March, and I hope that many people, both gay and straight, will join us in this cause. I wish everyone a successful and peaceful celebration in which no one gets hurt," - the U.S. Ambassador says in the message.
May we note that the Equality March and the festival as a whole is supported by representatives of the diplomatic missions of other progressive states - Sweden, Norway, Great Britain, Canada, Germany and the Netherlands.
