Rainbow NewsMoscow protests: gay activists and religious bigots detained
25 May 2013
The police in Moscow is detaining gay activists, participating in public events, that had been previously banned by the authorities. Near the State Duma the participants were detained after they appeared with a rainbow flag. The activist, rolling out the LGBT community flag, had been attacked... A few minutes earlier, around 1 pm, the police seized several people who were doing single-person picketing.
Journalist and human rights activist Elena Kostyuchenko said in her personal Twitter - "From the State Duma the police wagon is carrying 25 people to the station Zamoskvorech'e. Two have been beaten. But everybody's mood is excellent..." "Alekseev has been brought to the wagon (Nikolai Alekseev, the leader of the project "Gay Russia" - Gay.Ru). He'd also been punched ..." - she added.
The Nazis and religious bigots who tried to prevent the actions of LGBT citizens have been detained as well. They had come to the State Duma with icons and read prayers. According to various estimates, they constituted from 13 to 20 people.
As of 4 pm the detained gay activists were still being held at police station OVD Taganskoye (+7(495)270-00-33), at Vedernikov pereulok, 9 (metro station "Proletarskaya"). The rest of them - in station OVD Tverskoye (+7(495)650-99-03) - Dmitrovka Str., 28 (Metro station "Chekhovskaya"). The names of the detainees are listed at the link. The activists are said to have been released by the police after 5 pm.
Reporting on the activities of the police near the State Duma is the Russian TV channel "Russia Today"
Several LGBT actions are being held in Moscow today - some of them in the heart of the capital during the day and some in the evening in the "closed for repairs" Hyde Park in the city's Gorky Park.
In Gorky Park the authorities acted as tough as in the downtown. At 5 pm, once the action against homophobic violence started, several people were detained: among them Eugene Otto, Igor Yasin, Sergey Gubanov and others. "The ultra-right are attacking the participants with punches, spraying pepper gas. Police have had an order to prevent the action in any way..." - reported to the Committee for Workers' International (in Russian >>).
At the rally in Gorky Park several people were attacked. Four beaten by religious extremists. One of the activists had pepper gas sprayed in her face by one of the bigots awaiting for the picketers. Ambulance arrived, the victim was allowed to go to the hospital.
The action was attended by about 60 people. Nearly two dozen arrested. Most of them delivered to police station OVD Jakimanka (+7(495)951-47-64, metro station "Polyanka"). The names of the detainees are published by the Committee for Workers International.
