Russian Ombudsman: Gay Hate Law "may lead to human losses and tragedies"
12 Jun. 2013
Vladimir Lukin, the Russian Ombudsman, believes that the gay hate law which was approved yesterday by the State Duma "may have the high price to be paid for and may cause human tragedies".

The Russian mass-media are citing him as saying in his interview for the "Interfax" news agency, that "people who propose and lobby such laws might suspect or might ignore the fact that victimization and stigmatization are one of the most effective means of publicity". "The main problem would be its legal practice. Harsh and random usage of these norms may lead to human losses or tragedies".

For reference: The Russian Duma deputies approved yesterday the amendments on higher fines for "solicitation of non-tradition sexual relations" to minors.

We are informing you about the homophobic law initiatives, earlier known as the law on ban of "homopropaganda" among minors. Mrs.Elena Mizoulina, the lobbyist of the gay hate law, has personally declared that she had rewritten the draft law in such a way that the international LGBT community won't (according to her opinion) have a chance to file a suit. The word "homosexuality" has disappeared from the body of that law and a more capacious phrase "non-traditional sexual relations" has appeared instead.

This law will come in effect as soon it is signed by the Russian president and then published in the official media.
