Rainbow NewsU.S. warns its LGBT citizens of dangers of travel to Russia
28 Jul. 2013
The U.S. State Department has officially warned gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender citizens about the dangers of travel to Russia. Information on the official website of the international relations department of the country was recently updated.
The State Department reminds of the possible fines, arrests and deportation due to the newly enacted "Law of Mizulina," though also notes that "it is (still) not clear how the new law will apply." Earlier, the State Department's website warned only of the widespread "discrimination based on sexual orientation" and also that derogatory statements have been made by Russian government officials.
The State Department reminds that if tourists who are gay do decide to go on a trip to Russia, they should follow standard recommendations for LGBT tourist traveling to any country with a history of human rights violations of local gays and lesbians.
Authorities of countries such as Germany, Canada, Australia and others had already warned its LGBT citizens that their rights when traveling to Russia might be infringed upon.
The dangers of LGBT individuals visiting Russia are being widely discussed in the specialized Western publications in anticipation of two of the largest worldwide sporting events - the Olympics in Sochi in 2014 and the FIFA World Cup in 2018. Unlike the IOC, whose members are trying to convince gay tourists and athletes that traveling to Russia during the Olympics will be safe, sports officials in Russia have so far not responded at all to the drama playing out in the LGBT press. Only time will tell to whom LGBT foreigners will decide to listen.
