Rainbow NewsG-20: Barack Obama Meets Human Rights & Gay Activists in Saint-Petersburg
3 Sep. 2013
Due to cancellation of Obama-Putin bilateral talks during G-20 Summit in Saint-Petersburg, the leaders have got a free time. Barack Obama has decided to spend it also for meetings with gay activists. According to BuzzFeed, the meeting of the US President with human rights activists joined by representatives of two Russian LGBT organizations - "Coming Out" and "Russian LGBT Network" - will take place next Thursday on Crowne Plaza Hotel in Saint-Petersburg.
During recent two month Barack Obama many times raised gay issue in his statements concerning Russia and human rights. In particular, during the White House press-conference in early August 2013, he said "he was most of all saddened by the law that was aimed against gays and which was signed by President Vladimir Putin this summer". Then the American President told about the reason that induced him to cancel his visit to Moscow and his bilateral talks with Putin in September during the G-20 Summit in Saint-Petersburg - not only the position of Russian officials on fugitive spy Edward Snowden but problems with human rights in Russia, in particular.
It worth of mentioning that unlike his Russian colleague Barack Obama quite frequently meets LGBT activists - for example, in mid June 2013, almost synchronously with Gosduma unanimous voting on "homopropaganda ban" law.During that meeting Mr.Obama promised American people to grant same-sex marriage and total ban on LGBT discrimination of any kind.
