Rainbow NewsCake and eggs from the Orthodox activists did not scare gay activists in St. Petersburg
6 Sep. 2013
Rights advocates and gay activists gathered together in Hyde Park at Marsovo Polye in St. Petersburg on September 6. The action was held during the G20 summit in order to draw the world's attention to the growth of homophobia ... About 20 people rallied in the siege and, according to different resources, there were 50 to 100 Orthodox members and nationalists. The police and the riot police OMON behaved properly and did not allow for the homophobes to arrange a massacre the way they used to.
Passions ran high in the morning. Orthodox activists attacked Daniel Grachev during his one-man picket at Malaya Konushennaya St. Mr. Grachev ended up at the Olympics clock which counts down the days until the start of Sochi Olympics carrying a poster with the sign "Nuremberg trials not Sochi Olympics", written in English. In response, a cake was thrown to his face, but the nationalists did not stop there. The violence was finally stopped by the police who came to the rescue.
...The People's Council feels that it is really in command of St. Petersburg and openly runs a Youtube channel with records of attacks against gay activists.
Today, the police and the OMON behave on the streets of St. Petersburg as if they were in the middle of Europe. And they do not play along with the Nationalists. The latter, to one’s surprise, only making insults and, avoiding fights, throwing eggs and not stones. Although it is as much as two hours before human rights activists and gay activists will meet the U.S. President Barack Obama.
Participants of the rally thanked the OMON and the police upon completion. "It was the first LGBT rally, where the police and authorities have worked at their best." Double fences, rows of the OMON (there were a few hundreds of them), checkpoints on the perimeter of Marsovo Polye. It was a pleasure to watch ... "Honestly, there was a desire at all times to rub your eyes and exclaim: is it really happening in Russia and not somewhere in Sweden? Especially when recalling the events of May 17 and June 29 - attacks, hatred, stones, omission of police actions ..."- the Alliance of heterosexuals for LGBT equality (VKontakte social page in Russian) share their impressions.
At Marsovo Polye, the Orthodox activists and nationalists were shouting abusive slogans against the U.S. leader, who arrived in the St. Petersburg summit G20, throwing coins towards the gay activists." "The Judeo-Masonry and the State Department are paying you..." - homophobic activists were shouting, according to the participants. "Thank you for your solidarity," "Stop homophobia in Russia", Injustice anywhere - the threat of injustice everywhere!" - those were the slogan of gay activists. Some of them - in English, as you can see it in the photo essay by REGNUM. Orthodox activists answered back with prayers, coins and homophobic shouts.
In order to prevent transformation of eggs and insults into stones (according to Piter.Tv, there were some stones used at Marsovo Polye), and fights, the time and place of the meeting with the US leader Barack Obama until recently was kept secret. Previously, gay activists have repeatedly experienced violence on the streets of St. Petersburg after completion of public actions, human rights and cultural activities.
Following the meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama, human rights activists and gay activists will hold a press conference at one of the news agencies of the northern capital. It is scheduled for 20.00 hours.
