Rainbow NewsAttacked Participant of "Rainbow Coffee Drinking" in Saint-Petersburg Will Need Eye Surgery
4 Nov. 2013
Dmitry Ch. was severely injured in an armed assault (the second incident) on the LGBT event in Saint-Petersburg. "I am to be placed in a hospital, the bullet is still inside. I am to undergo an operation. Doctors say it is highly likely that the eye won't be able to see. Deifinitely not so well as before, but doctors assure to do their best...", wrote the victim on his Vkontakte social page.
Around 8 pm on November 3rd, 2013, two armed masked men raided the "Rainbow Coffee Drinking" event that took place in the office of the LaSky counter-AIDS Saint-Petersburg project. According to the blog of Valery Sozaev, "... one of the masked started shooting his pneumatic gun and the other - to brandish a baseball bat...". Two young men were injured in shooting and a young woman was beaten by the bat.
30 people were attending this LGBT event. Anyone is welcome to join - that is the meeting's format. It is aimed at AIDS and other STDs prevention. The assault coincided with the Russian LGBT Network's conference that took place those days in Moscow. The leader of the "LaSky Saint-Petersburg" was present in Moscow to head the delegation. The "Coffee Drinking" was also scheduled to discuss "Anti hate rally" which had taken place in the "northern capital" the day before.
It wasn't the first time LaSky Saint Petersburg was attacked by homophobes and nationalists. Earlier, LaSky's gay activists who openly defend their social views were threatened with violence via Vkontakte social network.
"Today's violence was the evidence of a rise of anti-gay sentiments in the city. And responsible for this are people, including politicians and clergymen, who by their speeches are stirring up the hatred towards LGBT. The assault on our organization which is engaged in AIDS and STD prevention was the evidence of homophobes' strategy shift - from assaults on gay actions on the streets to assaults on closed LGBT and humanitarian events", say LaSky's representatives.
The Russian LGBT Network and the Coming Out LGBT Organization promised to follow closely the investigation of this criminal case. According to the information from the city's main police department, "the police have begun to ascertain circumstances of the offense".
As we've informed you earlier, it was not the first incident with the armed assault on gay events in Saint-Petersburg. In May 2012 "religious feelings of an Orthodox man" were "assaulted" so much by an air balloon with the print "God equally loves men and women" that he took out his air gun Udar and shot in face of a gay activist. Now the case is being considered in the court, the Orthdox "victim-offender" is charged with hooliganism.
