Rainbow NewsWinner of the "Golden enema" for "homophobic outrage" award now the head of the main Russia's information agency
9 Dec. 2013
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree closing the RIA "Novosti" (Russian Information Agency), that featured a remarkably objective approach to problems of human rights for LGBT, and formed the agency "Russia Today" on its basis. Dmitry Kiselev, a staunch proponent of "brutal resistance" to gay community, a notoriously known official of The All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company "Russia" (VGTRK), is the winner of the "Silver Failure" and "Golden enema" awards, was appointed it's head. According to the official Kremlin website, this appointment was made "in order to improve the efficiency of state-owned media".
Kiselev is known by many examples of homophobic rants. For nearly two years one scandal, surrounding his statements at the show "Historical process", proposing "to bury or burn heats of gay people as unfit to life continuation", cannot be subsided. Simultaneously he demanded a ban on homosexuals to become donors. Kiselev later repeatedly emphasized that he is not ashamed of his words.
Gay organizations unsuccessfully tried to take out a process agains him. However, the Office of Public Prosecutor and the Investigative Committee did not find any "extremism" or "xenophobia" in his statements. On the other hand, some experts responded. For example, "Snob" magazine quoted the words of Paul Trakhtman, an immunologist, and the head of the department of the Federal Research Center of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Immunology named after Rogachev: "Concerning Kiselev. Either he's a Neanderthal, or he is profoundly sick ..."
In October 2013, after his summer scandalous statements during a programm at VGTRK received new resonance, Dmitry Kiselev was awarded by the "Silver Failure" in the nomination of "intolerance of the year or entertaining xenophobia". Earlier, in December 2012, human rights activists marked him by the "Golden enema" anti-award in the nomination of "jellied tongue" for the "true Nordic homophobic otrage."
