Rainbow NewsInstead of Barack Obama the US at the Winter Olympics in Sochi will be represented by legendary lesbian sportswomen
19 Dec. 2013
Barack Obama and his spouse Michelle won't visit the Olympics in Sochi. It became known that for the first time since 2000 at the ceremony of the opening of the games there will be no officials from the United States of the ministerial rank or higher. For reference: the Vancouver 2010 Olympics were attended by Joe Biden, 2012 London Olympics - by Michelle Obama. Nevertheless the US official delegation in Sochi will include legendary sportswomen lesbians - tennis player Billie Jean King and hockey player Caitlin Cahow who had won the silver Olympic medal.
This decision was taken by the White House against the background of harsh criticism of Russia for her discrimination policy towards LGBT. The H8 policy was clearly seen by gay and human rights activists around the world in signing by President Putin of two discriminatory laws - banning the so-called homopropaganda and adoption of orphaned children by same-sex (i.e. foreign) couples.
The White House avoided to mention yesterday the situation with gay rights in Russia but it was unanimously agreed that the presence of openly gay people in the US official delegation in Sochi did define the American policy in human rights sphere.
The mass media cites Billie's statement (on the photo with President Obama) who, according to her own words, "is very proud" to be included in the delegation. "I am also proud that I can stand along with the members of the LGBT community and support all sportswomen and sportsmen who will contest at Sochi and I hope that these Olympic games would become a turning point in the history of the universal acceptance of everyone", said Bilie Jean King who is recently well-known for her fight for LGBT rights.
Barack Obama is the third world leader who refused to attend the Sochi Olympics. Earlier Francois Hollande and Joachim Gauck said that they also would not visit Sochi.
