Rainbow NewsPolice and Federal Security Service Eyeballed RWAHO-2014
11 Apr. 2014
The police and FSB agents, as Russian Week Against Homophobia (RWAHO) organizers inform, were closely following the annual event of gay activists. Law and order watchdogs as well as the officials of the service on protection of the constitutional order and anti-terror activities were deeply interested whether the age of participants and actions in the framework of the RWAHO complied with the scandalous "Mizulina law" that banned "homopropaganda".
The Rainbow Association says two days before the RWAHO opening a high ranking police official, the head of the police department which is responsible for one of the largest districts of Moscow, visited the club where "The Hippies' rainbow festival" had been scheduled to take place to have a talk with this gay event's organizers. After the talks the policeman got in touch with the club's director and ordered to cancel the event immediately. Gay activists cite the club's director as saying that the necessary instructions were given to the high ranking police official by the Central Department of the Moscow's Police. In a statement issued yesterday gay activists have accused the FSB and Rapid Reaction Police Units in exerting pressure on them but gay activists avoided telling what kind of pressure was used on them. It has become known that "The hippies' rainbow festival" had got to be moved into another premises.
The police have also visited the meeting of "The parents' assembly" - a group of psychological support for parents of LGBT children. The policemen ordered to "dissolve immediately" suspecting those who attended the meeting in "extremist activities". "The rainbow association" accuses the police of "threating to dissolve the meeting by force", saying that "law and order watchdogs have been demanding from them not to announce such gatherings in social networks and in mass-media anymore regardless of the "18+" (for adults only) label".
Other events of the RWAHO-2014 were also checked by the OMON and Economic Crimes Police Division that resulted, as gay activists believe, in "panic in social networks" - many LGBT people did not dare to join the RWAHO...
