Rainbow NewsRussian LGBT Network supported international call for freedom of gay self expression
24 Apr. 2014
One month before the international day against homophobia and transphobia, which is celebrated on May, 17, a few civil rights groups have voiced a call for world leaders to express support for the right of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender population for self expression. It was initiated by such organizations as IDAHO Committee, IFEX, Article 19 and Amnesty International. By now more than 140 organizations have signed the petition. "Russian LGBT Network" was first to sign it in our country.
The document underlines the constrained conditions of many people, whos right to self expression is limited because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Considering this setup unacceptable, the human rights groups call for all world leaders to stand up for the right of people to express themselves.
The camaign accepts organizations as well as personal involvement through Thunderclap. We invite all watchdog agencies and everyone who supports equal rights for all people without exception to join the call.
"It is in our own country that teachers and professors get sacked for their expression of support for equality indiscriminately to sexual orientation and gender identity" - sais the head of the LGBT Network Igor Kochetkov, underscoring that "human rights activists and journalists are threatened with enormous fines for their publications." "In Uganda an open gay or a lesbian have a chance to be imprisoned for the lifetime. Prosecution of these people just for their struggle for human dignity is getting more widespread. This is why we pursue international solidarity and support for LGBT activists around the world."
