Rainbow NewsIDAHO: More than 150 gay activists joined "light" Rainbow flash mob in Saint-Petersburg
17 May 2014
More than 150 activists gathered in Saint-Petersburg to celebrate "Rainbow flash mob" on the International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO). Eyewitnesses say it was really the "lightest" action bearing in mind not only the fact that hundreds of multicolored balloons were released into the sky but also the fact that the event went relatively calm despite the threats from nationalists and religious extremists.
The action was joined not only by gays and lesbians but also by their relatives and friends. According to the "Rainbow flash mob" page @vk.com (Russian link), there were merely a dozen of gay haters who tried to disrupt the event. Although some local mass media informed that after the gay event clericals made attempts to attack and threw eggs at LGBT people who were heading back home.
"Fontanka" project shot a number of pictures where one could see gay hate attacks in Saint-Petersburg's subway later on and added that the police had quickly intervened and arrested two men - a nationalist and a gay activist. Homophobes' attacks were noticed by compact cameras of Nevex.TV's correspondents on Mars Champ as well.
However, the gay action's organizers despite everything asses it was a success. "It became clear that gay hate hysteria in the society had been an artificially manipulated situation that did not reflect the opinion of the majority of people. In given circumstances when two nationalist groups which are close to the authorities and "ruled" by an eccentric deputy of the local legislative body - Mr. Vitaly Milonov and another - by Andrey Kochergin - a guru of "Orthodox sadism", could not participate by some reason in counter meeting and thus no one came to join that gay-hate counter mob...", say organizers of the Rainbow flash mob.
"Participants of this flash mob have again called on everyone to be tolerant, to respect each other and to support equal rights irrespective of any characteristic. Five hundred rainbow colored balloons were released into the sky at the end. Since 2009 it was the first successful flash mob that went in an atmosphere of joy as it had been intended to be. The police worked well, the event went without any serious incident...", note gay activists.
