Rainbow News"Orthodox" siege of Sakharov Center failed to derail LGBT event
11 Oct. 2014
Past Friday a homophobic group attacked Russian capital’s Sakharov Center and held it blocked for two hours, reports the Rainbow Association. They intended to derail an LGBT event dedicated to the International Coming Out Day. "Police officers, arriving after a long delay, instead of enforcing order and protecting the venue, started a search for underage among the audience..." - say the activists in the press release.
"Several dozens of aggressive orthodox homophobes were trying to break into the Center, crush the door and shutter the windows, showing placards, shouting hate-speech slogans. Failing that, they started egg-throwing to the museum staff and guests, promising to beat anyone leaving the building. They were active in giving the media false interviews about ongoing chiled harassment..." - Rainbow Association reports.
"30 minutes later a police squad appeared, and was also thrown eggs at. The authorities remained idle and eventually left the Center. It was only Moscow Procecutor’s office intervention that forces the squad to return and detend the most aggressive orthodox actors."
Additionally the police set itself to find out "who allowed the LGBT community to perform the event, what goals it persuaded" and whether it was contrary to the "Mizoulina law". Everyone in the Sakharov Center had their identity checked to ensure their maturity.
Parts of what was happening is present on CCTV footage.
