Rainbow NewsPolice acted in concert with "common citizens" to disrupt an LGBT picket
12 Oct. 2014
The Rainbow association is reporting (link in Russian) seven activists detained in Moscow in district Sokolniki on an LGBT picket action, dedicated to the Coming Out Day. The action had been approved by the authorities, rights activists say. But the police demanded the action be stopped, alluding to the "Mizoulina law".
OVD-Info web resource describes that "10-15 minutes into the action police appeared and started an ID check, then stating that the actions’ intent was diverging from the one approved. After a long proceedings the activists agreed to wrap up the picket and packed all the banners. Howether a new police squad arriving at the scene started detentions." "Commong citizens" were assisting the squad only to turn out to be criminal police officers later at the police station, says TV channel Dozhd. "The crowd was aggressive, yelling homophobic shouts. How awful!.." the Rainbow Association siting the eyewitness.
In total 7 activists were detained: Reyda Linn, Nix Nemeni, Dmitry Svetly, Martha Khromova, Maria Goncharova, Vladimir Komov and Svetlana Daanchenkova. They were delivered to police station OVD Sololniki. Around 7 pm they said to be being released. What would be the charge and would there be any at all is still unknown. The police were citing "disobedience to a lawful request of an officer" as a reason for detention.
Activist Nikolay Bayev was seen on the picket. Let’s mention that last Friday Moscow’s Sakharov Center was attacked by a homophobic mob, held blocked for two hours. They aimed to disrupt an LGBT event dedicated to the Coming Out Day.
