Rainbow NewsEU Gay Football Championship welcomes three Russian LGBT Sports teams
12 Jun. 2015
The 3rd European Football Championship of LGBT teams is opening in Hamburg. On 11-14 June footballers from 30 countries of the world will compete for the EU Gay Football Cup. Although the football on this Championship is likely to be more lesbian than gay.
Two complete women football teams arrived in Hamburg from Saint-Petersburg - team Atlanta and Moscow - team Kryliya. Men football team from Russia would be joined on the spot by friends from Germany and Mexico.
In the first EU Championship 2011 that took place in Manchester, Russian teams did not participate. In the second, that was in Dublin in 2013 - a début was a success. The women team from Saint-Petersburg "Alternativa" became the champion. It beat Great Britain's football team (6 goals against 5).
The championship is organized by the International football association of gays and lesbians (IGLFA) that since 1992 is uniting more that 100 clubs and teams from more than 30 countries of the world. This year the Championship hosts 400 LGBT footballers and their straight sport-fans. Many teams, including from Russia, one can't name them lesbians teams. Do not tag them like that because in their team play not only gays and lesbians.
To say more, one should say that the visit of Russian teams to Hamburg was an idea implemented with the support of the Russian Federation of LGBT Sports (website in Russian >>).
