Rainbow NewsCensorship in Russia: Gay.Ru has been added to Russia's centralized internet blacklist
31 Mar. 2018
The administration of Gay.Ru (major and oldest LGBT website in Russia) has received the official notification that the website is going to be added to Russia's centralized internet blacklist (known as the "single register") maintained by the Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor). The real-time list is used for the country-wide censorship of individual URLs, domain names, and IP addresses.
The notification refers to the judgement of the Belyi Yar village court (Altai district, the Khakass Republic, Russia), which is available here (in russian). The court alleges that the website "contains information that spreads propaganda of non-traditional sexual practices, and its dissemination in Russia is prohibited". The website allegedly contains propaganda of homosexuality among minors and "may incite interest to try non-traditional sexual practices which is a real threat to their health".
Roskomnadzor requires that the Gay.Ru administration delete "prohibited" information within 1 day - however it does not state what must be deleted exactly. Website owners believe that the case has been concocted by the government. They emphasize that the website is for those over 18, and has necessary advisory.
Moscow-based Gay.Ru portal was 20 years old. It was founded in 1997 and quickly became major LGBT resource thanks to daily updates. It features more than 30,000 articles and documents in Russian and 500 in English. Gay.Ru is visited by more than three million visitors yearly or over 50,000 hits a day, including weekends.
